Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off following a topsy-turvy last day of play.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to seal the win, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory over Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion entered the final round with a single stroke lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.
Play-Off Climax
That led to a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.

To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Other Performances
Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 62 closing round of 62. It was his lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
