A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the property in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who escaped after the incident was apprehended soon after. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location displayed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was under an court order due to debts accumulated by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member triggered the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed the media.

A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the explosion included eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The official believed the explosion had happened on a floor above the access point and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, mentioning that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
