Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became publicly available.
The economist stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have served, excited about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their progress".
Summers, who once headed the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The newly public communications revealed that the official exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company said it understood the economist's choice to depart.
"We value his significant contributions and the insight he provided to the directors," the company stated.
Legislative Background
This news arrives after the two houses of the US legislature decided on recently to approve a measure that would require the US justice department to make public its documents on the case.
The measure will then move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has stated he expects to sign the legislation, after reversing his position on the matter following pressure from his followers.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-connected emails disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago mentioned numerous well-known personalities in the financier's past associates, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.
The messages showed that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to connect the official to prominent international personalities.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, the former official expressed he took "full responsibility for my poor judgment to maintain communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he hoped "to reestablish trust and mend bonds with the persons most important to me".
Career Background
The professor held leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He presided over Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a professor there. When declaring his departure from public duties previously on this week, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in Washington where he was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the organization.
The former official joined the leadership of the technology firm, which makes ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
