Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, reacting to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.
The Cause of the Latest Exchange
Wilson's reaction came after Payton delivered remarks following the Broncos' historic comeback win over the Giants. The coach suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- Wilson joined the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245 million extension.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season before Denver hired Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
- The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.
If Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the ugly split between the quarterback and his coach.
