The United States Department of Agriculture stated this past weekend that monthly food benefits through a critical national social assistance programs will not be distributed during the coming month due to the ongoing government funding lapse.

Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks

The federal closure lasted three and a half weeks as officials revealed the news, which followed appeals by more than two hundred Congressional Democrats pushing the department to tap into reserve accounts to cover the upcoming nutrition payments.

“The reality is, the well has run dry,” the department confirmed. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” starting next month.

Millions Affected

Over 40 million Americans rely on these food benefits, as reported by official statistics. Some regions, like one southwestern state, reliance on this assistance reaches 21% of residents.

Documents reviewed by a major news agency showed that federal authorities decided against using reserve funds for the upcoming payments.

Political Stalemate

Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree about the way to fund and reopen government operations.

A statement from the head of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities suggested that the White House had opportunities to act sooner to ensure continuous assistance.

“Officials were able and expected to made moves earlier to be prepared to use these funds,” the statement continued. “Rather, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” as conservative leaders work to influence Democratic senators to support a spending bill to restart government operations.

Executives in Louisiana and Virginia activated emergency protocols recently to free up resources for hunger relief expecting SNAP benefits not being issued next month.
