The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is developed, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Regional Background
Blackstone also owns luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
