UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
